Dear Mr Drake,

Thank you for your letter and apologies for this late reply.

I am sorry that you were horrified to see the pop group Yell on Blue Peter during one of our programmes in January. The reason for having them on the programme was that they were taking part in the 40th anniversary celebrations of the Variety Club of Great Britain which we featured. Far from being "unknown starlets" at that time their song was shooting up the Top Ten charts.

If you were able to watch Blue Peter on a regular basis you would know that out of eighty programmes a year, pop groups only appear in about four or five of them. We are proud of the fact that we are able to feature a wide variety of music and that will occasionally include pop music.

You may be interested to know that while Biddy Baxter was Editor she featured several items on pop groups - Musical Youth, A-ha and Elton John were just some of them.

Yours sincerely,

Lewis Bronze
